Monday 7 July saw the Isle of Man unite in celebration of our heritage — Tynwald Day 2025. A time-honoured ceremony with roots in Viking traditions, the event at St John’s and Tynwald Hill offered a beautiful blend of solemn ritual and joyful community spirit.
Photographing Tynwald Day isn’t a typical event brief. The pace shifts from slow ceremony to fast, spontaneous activity. Light moves from harsh sun to dappled tree cover. Crowds flow unpredictably. The challenge isn’t just capturing it all — it’s capturing it well. To work the way we like to — quietly, responsively, intentionally — we used a lightweight hybrid kit:
-Sony A7R V for clarity, dynamic range, and quick focus
-Multiple lenses to shift from wide storytelling to intimate portraiture
-Natural light only — no flash, no staging, just careful exposure and soft adjustments
It’s a day that asks for visual flexibility: switching between documenting formal state proceedings on the Hill and grabbing handheld, documentary-style frames in the fair.
We looked for what we always look for: layers — flags fluttering, banners waving, someone wiping a toddler’s face in the foreground while pipers file past in the distance. That’s where the story lives.
📸 We believe great event photography isn’t just about being present — it’s about being invisible enough to catch something real.
